Speaker Nancy Pelosi will unveil a sweeping police reform bill next week, her announcement coming just hours after the top House Republican signaled Thursday that he is open to working with Democrats, raising new hopes for a bipartisan congressional response to the killing of George Floyd and the national upheaval that followed.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he has been having discussions with his members — as well as Democrats — about tackling legislation to curb police brutality. Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by a Minneapolis police officer last week, sparking a wave of protests around the nation demanding justice and racial equality.
