A 44-year-old Farmersville man received a life sentence Tuesday for attempting to kill his wife last year.
A Tulare County jury previously found Randy Scroggins guilty of attempted murder and other felonies on Dec. 13, 2019. The “third strike” conviction resulted in Tuesday’s sentence of 81 years-to-life in prison.
Scroggins’ previous convictions were for making criminal threats in 2002 and making criminal threats and dissuading a witness in 2004.
Scroggins Shot Wife in Arm and Chest
On May 22, 2019, after a lengthy argument that involved pulling his wife by the hair, Scroggins shot her with a 9mm handgun through the arm and chest and then fled.
An ambulance transported his wife to Kaweah Delta Hospital, where she recovered from her injuries.
Arrested After 12-Day Manhunt, 7-Hour Standoff
Following a massive manhunt, Tulare County law enforcement personnel surrounded Scroggins at the family’s residence 12 days later on June 2, 2019.
After a seven-hour standoff, he was taken into custody by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.
Tulare County Deputy District Attorney Katrina Brownson prosecuted the case. The sheriff’s office and the Farmersville Police Department performed the investigation.
