Business prospects for Fresno pet groomers brightened Tuesday as Mayor Lee Brand allowed them to reopen immediately during the city’s COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders.

“I’ve been considering this decision and it’s time to start the gradual process of economic recovery,” Brand said in a news release.

Mayor’s Recovery Committee Met on Monday

The mayor’s announcement followed a meeting of the mayor’s recovery committee on Monday afternoon.

“I’m thankful for the exceptional advice provided by the committee and input from the public during this challenging time,” Brand added.

“This announcement will be joined by others in the future, as we move forward in a deliberate and reasonable way to return to normal routines without jeopardizing the health of our residents.”

Pet Groomers Must Follow PPE, Social Distancing Rules

City officials reviewed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s shelter-in-place orders before declaring pet grooming an essential business. They determined that pet grooming was a form of animal care.

Pet groomers, like the employees of all essential businesses, must wear personal protective equipment. In addition, businesses are required to follow social distancing and disinfecting rules.

Shelter-in-Place Orders

On April 10, the city strengthened and extended its shelter-in-place emergency ordinance through May 6 to combat the coronavirus.

At that time, Brand said: “The next two weeks are critical to slowing and eventually stopping the spread of COVID-19. I know we asking our residents and businesses to make tremendous sacrifices, but I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t willing to make the same sacrifices and if I didn’t think it was the best way to protect everyone in our community.”
