Why Nursing Homes Have Become COVID-19 Hotspots

The news of a COVID-19 cluster at a Visalia nursing facility is just the latest among a string of similar outbreaks across the country.
More than 400 nursing homes and long-term care facilities in the United States are now hotspots for person-to-person transmission of the deadly virus.
That’s because residents of nursing homes tend to be more medically frail, have more functional limitations, and have more chronic and complex conditions than other older adults. Based on available data on COVID-19, that puts nursing home residents at the highest risk for serious illness as a result of exposure.
