A team from Johns Hopkins University has built a near real time visual dashboard displaying regularly updated data on the spread of COVID-19, the new strain of coronavirus that is setting off health alarms around the globe.
The interactive, online dashboard project was spearheaded by Lauren Gardner, a civil engineering professor and the co-director of the school’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering. Data from the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and other sources illustrates how and where the virus is spreading. It also displays up to date statistics about deaths and confirmed cases of the disease on a worldwide map.
“We built this dashboard because we think it is important for the public to have an understanding of the outbreak situation as it unfolds with transparent data sources,” Gardner said. “For the research community, this data will become more valuable as we continue to collect it over time.”
The data is being made available to researchers to assist with developing treatment and containment responses to the virus.
Gardner said the “local level case data” the dashboard collects and displays “can provide more timely assessments of the outbreak, compared to the national level reporting organizations, which take longer to filter up.”
