Prather resident Craig Tolmie is the new chief deputy director for Cal Fire.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tolmie’s appointment last Friday.
Tolmie, 50, has been the assistant region chief at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, Southern Region since 2015.

Fire Protection, Forest Management Experience
He comes to his new assignment with extensive experience in fire protection and forest management.
For example, he was battalion chief for the Shaver Lake Battalion from 2006 to 2008, battalion chief for the Emergency Command Center in 2006, and unit forester-vegetation management coordinator from 1999 to 2004.
Previously, Tolmie was a consulting forester from 1996 to 1999 and business manager from 1997 to 1999 at Sierra Resources Consultants.
Post Pays $193,000 a Year
Tolmie’s new position does not require Senate confirmation and the job pays $193,524 annually.
He succeeds Janet Barentson, who retired in July.
Thom Porter is the director of Cal Fire.
