Clovis Quickly Identifies Its New Chief of Police

Curt Fleming will assume command of the Clovis Police Department on Aug. 3, succeeding Matt Basgall who announced his retirement date in late May.

Fleming, who is a captain, joined the department in 2006 after beginning his law enforcement career with the Fresno Police Department.
“Captain Fleming is a natural leader and an innovative professional with a clear understanding of emerging law enforcement issues. I am confident in his ability to lead the men and women of the Clovis Police Department in their mission to provide superior protection and service to our community,” said Clovis City Manager Luke Serpa, who made the appointment.

Fleming Is a Fresno State Graduate

Fleming, a Fresno native and Bullard High School graduate, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminology from Fresno State. In 2018, he graduated from the POST Command College.
Fleming brings wide-ranging experience to the chief’s position. He has been a patrol and narcotics sergeant, field training officer, detective, computer forensics examiner, motor officer, and patrol volunteer
coordinator. As a captain, he oversaw patrol, records, and communications.

Clovis PD: 200 Employees, $40 Million Budget

The department totals 200 staff members and its 2019-2020 fiscal year budget is nearly $40 million.
Basgall will retire Aug. 2, and Flemming takes over the next day.
