Fresno State is hosting its first Math Aerospace Academy for students in grades one through six who are excited at the prospect of working on things like NASA engineering design challenges and robot coding.
The program spans six Saturdays, starting Jan. 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the Education Building.

The curriculum will include age- and grade-appropriate hands-on activities based on NASA themes that support number sense, geometry, engineering, sequencing, money math, and more.
Fresno State is one of 13 institutions in the U.S. that are hosting Aerospace Academies funded by NASA. The program’s goal is to encourage interest and involvement of K-12 students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Weigh In on Local Control

Want to have a say in how money is budgeted in Fresno Unified? And also get a free ticket to the zoo? Here’s your chance.
The district is holding a series of workshops for community members to share their ideas on ways to support students and improve achievement. Input from the workshops will be considered as the district develops the 2020-21 fiscal year budget.
The Local Control and Accountability Plan workshops will run through Feb. 20. All workshops start at 5:30 p.m.

  • Jan. 8, Duncan Polytechnical High School (McLane Region)
  • Jan. 9, Edison High School
  • Jan. 14, Bullard High School
  • Jan. 22, Hoover High School
  • Feb. 4, Patino School of Entrepreneurship
  • Feb. 13, Fresno High School
  • Feb. 19, Roosevelt High School
  • Feb. 20, Sunnyside High School

In addition to having a say about improvements to Fresno Unified’s education program, participating adults will get an admission ticket to Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Childcare, translation, and dinner also will be provided at the workshops.
“We hope our community will take the time to attend one of the workshops being held throughout our district and share their thoughts on how to best invest in our students to help them reach their full potential,” Superintendent Bob Nelson said.

Pep Rally for Measure A

Community members supporting Clovis Unified’s $408 million Measure A are gathering Thursday afternoon for a pep rally-style event that will kick off the campaign to promote the bond measure’s passage. Measure A is on the March 3 ballot.

Honorary co-chairwomen Lisa Smittcamp, Fresno County District Attorney, and Lynne Ashbeck, Clovis City Councilwoman, will join volunteer co-chairs Kevin Peterson and Todd Cook in leading the get-out-the-vote event for the Yes on A campaign.
Superintendent Eimear O’Farrell and Clovis Unified school board members will appear at the event, which will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District, 808 Fourth St., Clovis.
