The suspect in a Friday shootout with law enforcement in a Tulare County orchard remains in critical condition and has undergone at least three surgeries, said Ashley Ritchie, spokesperson for the sheriff.
Marvin Chang, 32, reportedly opened fire several times in a series of incidents that began in Sequoia National Park. A California Highway Patrol officer was struck in the shoulder as authorities from multiple agencies closed in on Chang after his vehicle was disabled with spike strips.
Friday wasn’t Chang’s first encounter with the criminal justice system. In 2007, he was charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Los Angeles County court records.
He was ultimately convicted of the assault charge and sentenced to seven years in prison.
Friday’s incidents resulted in a pursuit by Woodlake police, Cal Fire, Tulare County Sheriff’s deputies and the CHP. It ended with deputies and other law enforcement agents firing “multiple rounds” at Chang, according Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux.
