In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his unwavering belief in Ukraine’s victory against Russia, despite the grim reality of the situation. The war, now in its twentieth month, has seen a significant portion of Ukraine’s territory under Russian occupation and tens of thousands of lives lost.
Zelensky’s steadfast conviction in Ukraine’s victory has been met with frustration from his closest aides, one of whom stated, “He deludes himself. We’re out of options. We’re not winning. But try telling him that.” Despite the setbacks, Zelensky remains resolute, refusing to negotiate a peace deal with Russia or even consider a temporary truce.
The Ukrainian President’s determination, however, has not been enough to revive dwindling public support for aid to Ukraine in the U.S. A recent Reuters survey revealed that only 41% of Americans want Congress to provide more weapons to Kyiv, a significant drop from 65% in June.
Zelensky’s struggle to keep Ukraine in the fight and his unwavering belief in victory, despite the odds, paints a picture of a leader determined to fight till the end.
