President Joe Biden, despite his commendable achievements in office, should consider not seeking re-election in 2024, according to an opinion piece by David Ignatius in the Washington Post.

Biden, who would be 82 at the start of a second term, faces public concern over his age, with 77% of the public, including 69% of Democrats, believing he’s too old to effectively serve another four years. His potential running mate, Vice President Harris, also faces popularity issues, with a 39.5% approval rating. The author suggests that Biden’s greatest accomplishment was halting former President Trump, and running again could risk undoing this.

The piece also suggests that Biden could encourage a more open vice-presidential selection process, but warns that this could alienate key constituencies. The author concludes by urging Biden to consider whether he is the best person to prevent a Trump return, and to be open with the country about his decision.
