“Israelism” is a new documentary that delves into the shifting perspectives of young American Jews towards Israel. The film follows the journey of Simone Zimmerman and a former soldier known only as “Eitan,” two young American Jews who were brought up to staunchly defend Israel. However, their firsthand experiences of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians lead them to question their beliefs and join a growing movement of young American Jews challenging the traditional narratives they were taught about Israel.
The film also includes insights from Jewish educators, former Anti-Defamation League President Abe Foxman, and thought leaders like Peter Beinart, Jeremy Ben-Ami, Noura Erakat, Cornel West, and Noam Chomsky. The documentary is directed by two Jewish filmmakers who share a similar journey with the film’s protagonists.
“Israelism” is released at a crucial time, as protests against the Israeli government’s plans to reform the judiciary system and undermine democracy are making headlines. The film also explores the increasing criticism of Israel by American Jews, with a significant percentage agreeing with the statement “Israel is an apartheid state.”
The documentary examines the evolving relationship between American Jews and Israel, sparked by recent events such as the rise of the alt-right, the removal of Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the controversy surrounding Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.
