With Snow in the Sierra Forecast, Check Out These CHP Driving Tips

The National Weather Service in Hanford says a Winter Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet from 10 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

“The majority of this snow will fall Saturday evening and Saturday night,” NWS Hanford said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

CHP officer Mike Salas and GV Wire’s Chad Mooney teamed up on the safe winter driving video below.

The snow line is expected to be at 5,000 feet elevation. Lower elevations can expect rain, NWS said.

Here are the NWS probabilities of at least a tenth of an inch of rain from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday:

  • Fresno 61%
  • Bakersfield 11%
  • Lemoore 36%
  • Merced 81%
  • Reedley 66%
  • Delano 26%
  • Hanford 46%
  • Madera 66%
  • Porterville 36%
  • Visalia 61%

These are the NWS probabilities for 6 inches or more of snow above 5,500 feet from 4 a.m. today through 4 a.m. Monday:

  • Tioga Pass 96%
  • Yosemite Valley 17%
  • Badger Pass 80%
  • Wawona 6%
  • Huntington Lake 49%
  • Shaver Lake 0%
  • Lodgepole 2%
  • Grant Grove 0%

The Forecast Ahead

A warming trend will start early next week, with afternoon temperatures approaching 5 to 10 degrees above normal by
Thursday, according to NWS.

In addition, the combination of this week’s rain and higher atmospheric pressure could produce overnight and early morning fog next week.
