The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has resulted in a level of destruction akin to some of the most catastrophic urban warfare in recent history, The Wall Street Journal reports.

As of mid-December, Israel had launched 29,000 bombs, munitions, and shells on the region, causing extensive damage to nearly 70% of Gaza’s 439,000 homes and about half of its buildings.

Damage to Essential and Historical Infrastructure

The bombardment has not spared historical sites, including Byzantine churches and ancient mosques, nor has it left untouched commercial and residential structures such as factories, apartment buildings, shopping malls, and luxury hotels.

Theaters and schools have also been hit, and much of Gaza’s essential infrastructure, including water, electrical, communications, and healthcare systems, is beyond repair.
