Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama has seen a lot during his long career in law enforcement.

But he says that he hasn’t “stopped thinking about” the “horrific” stabbing death of 26-year-old N-Kya Rebecca Logan, who was 36 weeks pregnant and just had a baby shower a few days before.

After Logan’s burning body was found on a dirt access road in the 4400 block of North Cornelia Avenue on Tuesday, police arrested her brother, 41-year-old Aaron Jamal Dudley, on two counts of murder.

“It takes an awful lot of evil, hate, and planning to stab your own sister multiple times,” said Balderrama at a news conference Wednesday.

Balderrama also revealed during the news conference that police responded to a call from Logan and Dudley’s home in 2021. Dudley was placed on a 72-hour hold after he was judged to be a threat to himself and others.

Melted Gas Can Near Corpse

Investigators believe that Dudley repeatedly stabbed Logan, put her body in a city trash bin, wheeled the bin about four blocks to the access road, poured gasoline on his sister’s body, and set her ablaze. Detectives said that a melted gas can was found feet away from the victim. They also detected the presence of an accelerant on Logan’s body.

Surveillance video showed Dudley pushing the bin through his neighborhood, police said.

Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said that Dudley possibly could be charged with two counts of first-degree murder. And, if he is convicted, the death penalty could be on the table.

This was the 57th and potentially the 58th homicide of 2022 in Fresno, according to the police department. At this time last year, the city had 71 homicides.
