A new Berkeley IGS poll indicates that California voters have had enough of former president Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.
About 61% of the state’s registered voters oppose Biden seeking a second term, and 71% gave a thumbs-down to Trump being the GOP standard bearer for the third consecutive time.
The strong opposition to Trump reflects the huge voter registration advantage that Democrats have over Republicans in the state. Two-thirds of Republicans want Trump on the ballot again compared to 7% of Democrats.
Among Democrats, the sentiment about Biden is evenly split — 46% favoring and 46% opposing another Biden presidential bid.
Support for Newsom Presidential Bid
Though Gov. Gavin Newsom says he’s not planning a 2024 presidential run, the poll suggests that California Democrats would back such an effort.
Among the party’s primary voters, 25% selected Newsom as their first or second choice if Biden doesn’t run. Sen. Bernie Sander (I-Vermont) and Vice President Kamala Harris each totaled 18% as first or second choices.
It’s Trump vs. DeSantis on the GOP Side
According to the poll, the Republican derby centers almost exclusively on Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump received 38% support and DeSantis 27%.
The poll was done online in English and Spanish among 9,254 registered voters in the state beginning Aug. 9 and ending Aug. 15.
