AdImpact, a website that tracks political media spending, tweeted Monday that Gov. Gavin Newsom will begin running cable television ads in Florida on July 4.

The report inspires many interesting questions.

Is Newsom prepping to run for president in 2024 or 2028? Is he using the ads to enhance his status as perhaps the Democratic Party’s top-ranked pugilist against the Republicans in the national culture wars? Or is Newsom delivering a pre-emptive strike against Donald Trump possibly announcing his presidential bid, as has been rumored, on July 4?

Newsom has said several times that he wouldn’t challenge President Joe Biden in 2024. And, if Biden decides against a re-election bid, political insiders say it’s highly unlikely that Newsom would step on the presidential aspirations of Vice President Kamala Harris, a fellow California Democrat.

AdImpact later tweeted that the Newsom ad buy was for $105,000 on Fox News — suggesting that the governor is eager to attack Republicans on culture war issues such as abortion and gun control.

What we know for sure: Newsom has $25 million in his campaign account and is the overwhelming favorite to win re-election in November.
