Fresno deputy chief of police Mark Salazar plans to run for sheriff, sources tell GV Wire. He will make the announcement at 2 p.m. today at the county election office.

Salazar, a longtime veteran of the department, has worked his way up the ranks. His most recent promotion was from captain to deputy chief in 2020. His assignments included the MAGEC gang task force, homicide robbery, and internal affairs.

He is well known for his work with the Police Athletic League.

Mims Not Running

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims announced last Friday that she will not seek re-election when her term ends in January. She has endorsed assistant sheriff John Zanoni in the upcoming election on June 7.

Salazar, 50, is a registered Democrat living in northwest Fresno. Zanoni, 48, is a registered Republican who lives only a few blocks away.
