Community members can get an up-close look at the Fresno Police Department via its Residents Academy, which kicks offs on Thursday, Feb. 17.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the annual academy is more accessible than ever. Though in-person seating is limited, residents can participate virtually as well.
And, translation services have been expanded to three languages: Spanish, Hmong, and Punjabi.
The academy’s goal is to educate residents on how the police department functions. One night each week, officers from the various units will present an overview of their duties and explain how the department can assist the community.
Following each presentation, there is a question-and-answer session.
“It’s definitely a two-way conversation,” said officer Felipe Uribe, who is the department’s assistant public information officer.
College Credits Available
Those who complete the 18-week academy are eligible for college credits. To receive the credits, attendees must register with Fresno City College by Feb. 17.
Uribe said that anyone thinking about a career in law enforcement would find the academy beneficial because “it gives an understanding of what we do — not just what you see on TV.”
The weekly three-hour classes are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. through June 16 at Wawona Middle School, 4254 N. Thorne Avenue, in northwest Fresno.
Free childcare will be provided at the school.
How to Register
To register, call the Residents Academy (559 621-2353), Parent University (559 457-3390), or email mgpi@fresno.gov.
Applications are available in the Fresno PD lobby, 2323 Mariposa St., and at Parent University, 850 N. Blackstone Ave.
