Americans remain more favorable toward capitalism than socialism, but support for capitalism has fallen to its lowest level recorded by Gallup.
Fifty-four percent of U.S. adults view capitalism positively, down from 60% in 2021, according to an Aug. 1-20 Gallup survey. Meanwhile, 39% view socialism favorably, while 57% have a negative opinion.
The decline in support for capitalism was driven by Democrats and independents, whose positive ratings each fell 8 percentage points since 2021.
Forty-two percent of Democrats now view capitalism positively, compared with 66% who favor socialism. Among Republicans, 74% view capitalism favorably and 14% view socialism that way.
Americans remain strongly supportive of small business and free enterprise, with favorable ratings of 95% and 81%, respectively.
Views of big business have worsened. Thirty-seven percent rate big business positively, down from 52% in 2019, while 62% view it negatively.
