One of three participants in a Fresno ring that cashed counterfeit U.S. Treasury checks and committed identity fraud is headed to prison for three years and nine months.

Jeffrey Michalk, 44, of Fresno, was sentenced in federal court on Monday after pleading guilty in August to conspiracy, theft of public money, and aggravated identity theft.

In addition, following his admission of guilt this summer, the court ordered Michalk to forfeit $498,100 to the government.

Other Ring Members Face 2024 Sentencings

Two other ring participants, Fresno residents Steve Gomez, 41, and Michael Dugan, 49, also have pleaded guilty. The ring is believed to have cashed 264 fraudulent checks totaling more than $500,000. They are scheduled for sentencing in January and February, respectively.

“Today’s sentence is a reminder that the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration is committed to aggressively investigating those who commit financial crimes impacting the tax administration and victimizing the citizens of our communities,” said Special Agent in Charge Rod Ammari in a news release.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Henry Z. Carbajal III is prosecuting the case.
