Corey Day showed the racing world he has the stuff to become Hendrick Motorsports’ next star over three days in Las Vegas.
Not only did the 20-year-old Day win the Interstate Batteries High Limit sprint car series on the dirt track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday night, he dueled with one of racing’s most-accomplished drivers and Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson on dirt and pavement.
Larson edged Day by 0.096-seconds in Thursday night’s sprint car thriller and also got the better of him Saturday afternoon in the nationally televised NASCAR O’Reilly Series race. But Day led in the final stage before fading to eighth place, as Larson claimed the victory.
When Larson had completed his celebratory burnout, his 11-year-old son Owen met him at his car — decked out in a Corey Day hoodie.
“Corey was fun to watch,” Larson said. “He did a good job. I don’t know if you could see on-boards of him but he was sideways. It was cool to see.”
Fourth Straight Top 10 in the O’Relly Series
It was Day’s fourth-consecutive top-10 finish piloting the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy in the O’Reilly Series, which is one step down from NASCAR’s premiere Cup Series.
Meanwhile, Larson will look to sweep the NACAR weekend at Las Vegas in Sunday afternoon’s Cup race on the 1.5 mile paved tri-oval.
As for Day, he pulled double duty on Saturday, and was battling for second back on the dirt in the High Limit series until breaking an axle late in the race.
When he’s in a sprint car, Day drives for the team owned by two-time World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers of Clovis. Day has 11 main event victories during his career on the High Limit circuit.
Strong Start to the Season for Scelzi
Fresno sprint car drivers Giovanni Scelzi, who is now racing for Spire Motorsports, is sixth in the early season High Limit standings.
He led early in Thursday’s race and finished third behind Larson and Day.
