Fresno police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that injured an Amtrak bus driver earlier this week at the downtown train station.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, Southwest Policing District officers were dispatched to the Amtrak Station at Tulare and P streets after reports of multiple shots fired and a shooting victim, according to the Fresno Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found an Amtrak bus that had been struck by gunfire and located shell casings in front of the station. Officers contacted the victim, who was identified as the bus driver.

Police said the driver had a graze wound to his cheek from broken glass and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was later released and is recovering at home.

Driver Cleaning Bus While Incident Occurred

Investigators said the driver had dropped off passengers and was cleaning the bus when he saw a man approach. As the driver continued cleaning, he heard several loud sounds and the bus windows began to shatter.

The driver took cover but felt something strike his face. He ran toward the back of the bus and jumped out of an emergency window, breaking his ankle as he escaped, police said. The suspect fled on foot.

Felony Assault Unit detectives later reviewed surveillance video and distributed images of the suspect to officers throughout the department.

On Thursday morning, an officer conducting proactive patrol near Blackstone and Holland avenues spotted a man matching the suspect’s description and wearing similar clothing, police said.

Officers contacted the man and located a black 9mm Glock handgun with an extended magazine among his belongings. A records check showed the firearm had been reported stolen.

Detectives identified the man as Deandre Dewayne McClain, 33, and determined he was responsible for the shooting at the Amtrak station.

McClain was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges related to the incident.
