A head-on collision on Highway 180 in Fresno County Wednesday left a 21-year-old woman dead and sent three others to the hospital, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred around 4 p.m. east of Old Oak Road when a white 2021 Tesla traveling west crossed the double yellow lines and collided with an eastbound 2016 Kia Soul. The Kia Soul then went about 30 feet down a mountainside.

The driver of the Kia Soul died at the scene. The Tesla driver, a 41-year-old man, suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital. A 21-year-old passenger in the Tesla and two children under five, who were properly secured in rear safety seats, were also hospitalized as a precaution.

The CHP said the Tesla driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, believed to involve drugs.

Highway 180 was closed for roughly an hour while emergency personnel responded and investigators processed the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
