The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols across the city on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. as officers look for drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
Police said impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving, and drivers are urged to follow directions for use and read warning labels about operating a vehicle.
Authorities also reminded the public that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, according to police.
Funding for the patrols was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
