The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to remove impaired drivers from local roads.
The checkpoint will run from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, police announced. Officials selected the checkpoint site based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes in the area.
During the last DUI saturation period on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Fresno Police Department reported 19 arrests.
The primary purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers, according to the department.
Police reminded the public that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol consumption. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving ability. While both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, Fresno police said.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face significant consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, which receives money from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
