A roadway in Visalia was completely closed Wednesday after a large sinkhole opened in the pavement, forcing authorities to warn motorists to find alternate routes during school traffic hours.

Northbound and southbound Conyer Street between Feemster and Howard streets remained closed as crews worked to repair the damage, according to the Visalia Police Department.

The closure will remain in place for an undetermined amount of time, officials said.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area and expect delays, particularly noting the impact on school traffic patterns.

The department said it would provide updates as more information becomes available.
