Porterville Man Convicted of Child Sexual Abuse Crimes, Faces 450 Year Sentence

A jury in the Visalia Division of the Tulare County Superior Court convicted a Steven Avila, 33, of Porterville, of multiple sexual offenses against two children on Monday, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office announced.

A Tulare County jury found Avila guilty of eighteen counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, one count of contacting a minor for sexual purposes, and one count of sending harmful material to a minor.

Jurors also upheld special allegations of substantial sexual conduct and that the crimes involved multiple victims. Eighteen of the convictions are strike offenses under California law.

The crimes occurred in Porterville between 2018 and 2021. One victim was between 11 and 13 during the abuse, and a second victim was between 4 and 5 at the time, according to court records.

Avila faces a potential sentence of more than 450 years to life in state prison at his April 2 sentencing. He also will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
