Two Missouri deputies were shot and killed Monday during a traffic stop and subsequent manhunt in southwestern Missouri, authorities said.
In a statement, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said the deputies were with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and were conducting a traffic stop along a highway around 4 p.m. when the driver opened fire. One deputy was shot and killed at the scene.
Authorities launched a large-scale manhunt involving nearly 100 law enforcement officers. During the search, the suspect was tracked down and killed in a shootout with deputies. A second Christian County deputy was shot and killed in that exchange. Two other officers were injured.
One of the fallen deputies was identified as 30-year-old Gabriel Ramirez.
Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux and his department extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deputies, calling the shootings a “senseless act of violence” and a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face each day.
