Chain control restrictions are in place on Highway 168 in the four-lane section near Lower Vista at approximately 1,500 feet in elevation, according to the California Highway Patrol in Fresno on Thursday.
Officials urged drivers heading into the mountains to ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for snowy conditions. While warm clothing such as boots, gloves, and beanies may help drivers stay comfortable, authorities emphasized that vehicles must also be prepared.
The CHP advised motorists not to wait until they are stopped in traffic in snowy conditions to learn how to install tire chains. Drivers are encouraged to practice putting chains on before traveling into higher elevations.
“If you can’t put them on in your driveway, you won’t magically learn at 1,500 feet in freezing temps,” the agency said, urging drivers to practice ahead of time.
