The Modesto Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday evening as part of an ongoing effort to remove impaired drivers from local roads.
The checkpoint is scheduled for Feb. 20 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city, police announced Tuesday.
Officers select checkpoint locations based on data showing areas with high rates of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department. The operation aims to improve public safety by identifying and stopping suspected impaired drivers.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Sgt. Darien Wilson. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police emphasized that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol consumption. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect driving ability. While California allows medicinal and recreational marijuana use, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face significant consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the department.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
