The city of Fresno and the San Joaquin River Conservancy have secured $2 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Economic Development Initiative.
“By investing in these lands, we’re protecting local wildlife, expanding access for our communities, and making sure future generations can experience and take pride in the San Joaquin River.” said U.S. Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21).
Plans also include creating multiple ADA-accessible entry points and supporting recreation opportunities such as school tours, nature walks, and paddle trips.
One of the top priorities is opening Camp Pashayan, also known as Camp Fish, a 40-acre conservancy property located near Highway 99 along the river.
“Thanks to Congressman Costa’s leadership, we can continue building a riverfront that serves families, protects wildlife, and creates new opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors.” said Fresno City Council President Karbassi.
The project includes a 2.4-mile extension of the Lewis S. Eaton Trail, along with new access points and a trailhead connection from Spano Park. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months.
