Fresno police issued 112 citations for hands-free cell phone violations during a distracted driving enforcement operation on Saturday.

A total of 130 citations were issued during the operation when including non-distracted driving violations, and one DUI arrest was also made, police said.

California has had distracted driving laws since 2008. Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold their phone or other electronic device while driving, including for talking, texting or using an app.

Using a handheld cell phone while driving can result in a fine. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense results in a point being added to a driver’s record.

Authorities urged drivers who need to make an important call or program directions to pull over to a safe parking spot and to silence their phones or place them out of reach before driving.

Funding for the enforcement operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
