A Fresno man pleaded guilty Monday to filing more than 50 false federal income tax returns, claiming over $1.5 million in fraudulent refunds, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced.

Marice Curry, 35, submitted the returns in 2023 for businesses by falsely claiming refundable fuel tax credits, which are intended to let companies recover excise taxes on fuel used for off-highway purposes like farming and fishing.

Curry knew the businesses were not entitled to the credits, according to court documents.

The IRS Criminal Investigation division led the probe, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton is prosecuting the case. Curry is scheduled for sentencing May 26 before U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston.

He faces up to three years in prison and a $100,000 fine, though the court will consider federal sentencing guidelines and other factors in determining his actual punishment.
