Federal agents fired “defensive shots” Wednesday morning after a man rammed his vehicle into law enforcement during an immigration operation in South Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The suspect, identified as William Eduardo Moran Carballo, a Salvadoran national accused of being in the U.S. illegally and participating in human smuggling, was not injured and was taken into custody after crashing his car in Willowbrook. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent sustained unspecified injuries.
The operation drew a crowd of more than 50 residents and protesters near 126th Street and Mona Boulevard, just blocks from a middle school. Witnesses described shattered car windows and a heavy federal presence, including agents in tactical gear.
Some residents expressed anger over the shooting, waving Mexican flags and chanting “ICE out of L.A.” Assemblymember Mike Gipson called the incident “reckless gunplay” in community spaces.
The FBI and ATF are investigating the shooting.
