A traffic stop on Highway 99 in Merced led to the discovery of a rifle and suspected drugs, the California Highway Patrol said on Tuesday.
CHP officers stopped a vehicle traveling southbound near Le Grand Road for following another car too closely. During the stop, an officer noticed signs of suspicious behavior and observed part of a rifle hidden inside the vehicle, according to CHP.
Authorities said the driver was on active probation and had prior gun-related convictions. A search of the vehicle uncovered the rifle, a glass smoking pipe, and a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
CHP said the stop highlights how routine traffic enforcement can result in the removal of dangerous items from the roadway. The incident occurred during a graveyard shift patrol.
