As residents prepare to celebrate the New Year, the Visalia Fire Department is reminding the public that illegal fireworks are not allowed within the city.
Fire officials said first-offense fines for illegal fireworks start at $2,000 and urged residents to celebrate safely by using only approved “Safe and Sane” fireworks.
A “Safe and Sane” firework is a ground-based novelty item that does not fly or explode, such as fountains, sparklers, snakes, smoke balls and pinwheels, and is identified by an official State Fire Marshal seal.
While considered less dangerous than aerial rockets and firecrackers, these fireworks still require adult supervision, the department noted.
The department urged residents to reserve 911 for emergencies and to use the non-emergency line at (559) 734-8116 or the reporting lines at (559) 513-8080 for illegal fireworks use and (559) 713-4026 for illegal fireworks sales.
