The Visalia Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday as part of efforts to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road, the department announced.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on areas with a higher frequency of impaired driving-related incidents. Officers also reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving ability.
While medical and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, police said.
According to the department, a first-time DUI offense can result in fines and penalties averaging $13,500 and a suspended driver’s license.
