The Fresno Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, officials announced.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, and the primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a person’s ability to drive. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, police said.

Officials said drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
