A 20-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle collision at an intersection in Fresno County, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said its communications center received an automated cell phone crash notification at about 1:30 a.m. reporting a collision at the intersection of Cherry and American avenues.
Investigators determined a northbound Chevrolet sedan, driven by the 20-year-old man, was traveling on Cherry Avenue at a high rate of speed as it approached the intersection. At the same time, a Nissan sedan driven by a 38-year-old male rideshare driver with three adult passengers was traveling eastbound on American Avenue and began to enter the intersection from a posted stop sign.
The Chevrolet failed to stop and collided with the Nissan, causing the Nissan to spin and come to rest blocking both northbound lanes of South Cherry Avenue, the CHP said. The Chevrolet continued north, crashed through a chain-link fence and came to rest several hundred feet beyond the initial point of impact.
The driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing a seat belt and was found unresponsive inside the vehicle. Fire personnel extricated the driver, and despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said.
The Nissan’s driver and passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment of complaint-of-pain injuries.
Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the collision, which remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
