Fresno police will deploy additional officers from Dec. 12 through New Year’s Day as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, urging residents to avoid impaired driving during what officials say is one of the most dangerous times on the roads.
The department noted that 1,038 people were killed nationwide in alcohol-impaired crashes in December 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Officers will be focusing on drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, prescription medications, over-the-counter products or cannabis.
Police encouraged people to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, staying in for the night, or using public transit, taxis or rideshare services, and advised residents to call 911 if they spot an impaired driver.
The enforcement effort is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
