A 25-year-old man was struck and killed by a semi-truck while walking in the slow lane of northbound Highway 99 in Fresno late Tuesday, authorities said on Wednesday.
The California Highway Patrol said it received a call around 10:30 p.m. reporting a pedestrian in the roadway just south of Clinton Avenue.
Officers were dispatched, but before they arrived, the man was hit by a Volvo semi-truck driven by a 21-year-old man traveling in the far-right lane.
The impact sent the pedestrian into the far-left lane of the highway, where CHP officers and medical personnel found him. He suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
All three northbound lanes of Highway 99 were temporarily shut down for the investigation.
It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a role. CHP said toxicology results are pending with the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.
