Newsweek reports that Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on southern Gaza early Friday, hours after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was meant to take effect, CNN and the BBC reported.
Strikes were reported around 5:45 a.m. local time in Khan Younis, with residents near the Netzarim corridor describing artillery shelling and gunfire.
Eyewitnesses also reported shelling in Gaza City’s Al-Sabra and Tal Al-Hawa neighborhoods.
Reuters published footage showing a flash in the Gaza sky at 5:55 a.m. followed by an explosion and black smoke.
Palestinian news agency Wafa reported further bombings in Khan Younis and Gaza City.
Israel’s government had approved a ceasefire plan to end the two-year war, but it remains unclear whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to halt operations.
The Times of Israel reported that under cover of strikes, the IDF began pulling back troops to agreed lines. Newsweek could not independently verify the reports.
