The Chargers continue the 2025 regular season at SoFi Stadium against the Commanders on Sunday, October 5, at 1:25 p.m. PT.
To get you prepped for the Week 5 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.
Where the Commanders Stand
The Commanders are currently 2-2, with wins over the Giants and Raiders and losses to the Packers and Falcons.
Dealing With Injuries
The Commanders were without their starting quarterback, Jayden Daniels, for the past two weeks. Daniels sustained a knee injury in the Week 2 loss to Green Bay. Veteran Marcus Mariota started in his place. Daniels is expected to play against the Chargers, however. Another key offensive player, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, suffered a quad injury in Week 3 and was sidelined this past weekend as a result. McLaurin’s status for this Sunday remains uncertain. Other players who won’t play include edge defender Javontae Jean-Baptiste (pec), safety Will Harris (fibula), cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring) and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise (quad).
Despite Injuries, Still Have Success Offensively
Despite missing several starters due to injuries, the Commanders still managed to produce 48 points combined in the past two games. Their 26.8 points per game rank eighth in the NFL. Much of their success has come on the ground, as they’re averaging 154.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks second.
Roller Coaster of a Defense
The Commanders’ defense has had its bright spots through the first four weeks, like in third-down situations, ranking sixth in the league. However, they’ve struggled in some areas, particularly against explosive plays. Last Sunday, the Falcons put up 435 yards on an average of 6.8 yards per play against Washington. The Commanders allowed 10 plays of at least 15 yards. The Commanders have allowed 32 explosive plays, tied for the fifth-most in the league. Washington ranks middle of the pack in scoring defense, allowing 22.8 points per game.
