Brock Purdy’s toe injury isn’t the only QB injury obstacle facing the San Francisco 49ers after their 16-15 victory over the visiting Arizona Cardinals on Eddy Pinero’s 35-yard field goal Sunday.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, quarterback Mac Jones after Sunday’s game said he aggravated the PCL strain he suffered in the 49ers’ second preseason game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.
“Yeah, so I had a little injury that I just reaggravated and I’m good,” Jones told reporters in his press conference. “I took the brace off because I wasn’t moving around very well and then put it back on after that. But yeah, I felt like it affected my play a little bit, which I was disappointed about. I could have just been tougher. It was affecting my reads and everything. So anyways, finished the game out and just going to do treatment and I should be good.”
Jones appeared to suffer the injury late in the third quarter when he was hit by a couple of Arizona Cardinals defensive linemen. He got up limping after the play and then appeared to be hindered by his knee injury when he tried a handoff later in the drive. By the 49ers’ next offensive series he was wearing a brace on his left knee.
There’s a chance this is a significant problem for the 49ers. It’s unclear if Jones will need to miss any time, but if he does and starting QB Brock Purdy hasn’t returned from his toe injury by Week 4, San Francisco may be forced to start practice squad QB Adrian Martinez in their matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, things appear to be trending the right way for Purdy who was limited all week in practice leading up to Week 3. He was originally listed as questionable, but the team ruled him out a few hours before kickoff.
Jones is 2-0 as the 49ers’ starting QB this season. On Sunday he completed 27-of-41 throws for 284 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In two games he is 53-of-80 for 563 yards (7.0 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns with one interception. His quarterback rating is 98.1.
