A man was arrested Wednesday on multiple child-related charges after police say he tried to lure two juveniles into a vehicle, prompting a relative of the children to confront and assault him.

Delano police said officers responded around 10:20 a.m. to the area of Garces Highway and Ellington Street after the juveniles reported that an adult male had attempted to persuade them to enter a white Mercury Grand Marquis. The minors ran into a nearby business for safety and contacted their mother.

Police said a relative, Brendon Santana, 33, arrived and physically confronted the suspect, identified as Jose Martin, 55, injuring him.

Martin was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of child molestation, child endangerment, kidnapping a child under 14, and failing to register as a sex offender, according to the department.

Santana was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious injury.

Investigators said the vehicle involved did not belong to Martin and has been returned to its owner.
