A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a crash that killed an 89-year-old driver Saturday afternoon near Sanger, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Refujio Perez, 59, was driving a Nissan Rogue southbound on Newmark Avenue, just south of Jefferson Avenue, at 1:54 p.m. when he veered off the road.

The Nissan’s right-side tires left the roadway and entered the west dirt shoulder, where it struck the rear of a parked Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla was occupied by an 89-year-old man in the driver’s seat. The impact critically injured the driver, who died at the scene, CHP said.

The force of the crash pushed the Toyota into three other empty parked vehicles.

Perez sustained minor injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was medically cleared.

He was later booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, authorities said.

The incident remains under investigation.
