A vacant commercial building was destroyed in an early morning fire Sunday in Fresno, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters responded around 3:30 a.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire in the 600 block of West Shaw Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found flames burning through the roof of the single-story building.

Due to the intensity of the blaze, firefighters attacked the fire from the outside, using ladder trucks in a defensive strategy.

Crews also worked to protect nearby homes in the Old Fig Garden neighborhood from embers carried by the wind.

A total of 32 firefighters responded to the scene. The fire was contained without spreading to other structures, fire officials said.

The building was declared a total loss and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
