The Tulare Police Department issued a statement stating its stance on immigration enforcement, emphasizing that it does not participate in federal immigration activities or detain individuals based solely on their immigration status.
The announcement comes in response to growing public concern following recent federal immigration enforcement actions and protests across California.
“Immigration enforcement is solely the responsibility of federal law enforcement agencies,” the department said. “The Tulare Police Department does not participate in actions that would contribute to mass deportations.”
Officials cited California Senate Bill 54, passed in 2017, which restricts local law enforcement from assisting in federal immigration efforts.
The department stated it does not hold individuals for immigration agents, share information without consent, or detain people solely for immigration-related reasons.
Police said they are not aware of any such enforcement activities taking place in Tulare and noted that federal authorities rarely inform them of operations in the city.
The department also affirmed residents’ rights to peaceful protest, while discouraging violence and property destruction. “We care about the well-being of all Tulare residents and will respond to all calls for help, regardless of a person’s immigration status,” the statement said.
