The Fresno Police Department will conduct an enforcement operation Friday targeting drivers violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.

Under state law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or electronic device while behind the wheel. This includes talking, texting, or using apps, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

Violators face fines, and a second offense within 36 months of a prior conviction will add a point to the driver’s record.

Authorities urge drivers to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their vehicles. Those needing to make a call or input directions are advised to pull over safely, police said.

The enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
